Too many commentators are simplifying the election results, including Jim Hightower in his reasonable article in Tuesday’s paper, where he says “the people have spoken up for Donald Trump,” implying that voters chose Trump as the next president. As of Tuesday morning, Nov. 22, Tim Marcin at the International Business Times reported the following: 63,757,077 Clinton total votes equals 48 percent while 62,004,178 Trump total votes equals 46.7 percent The people didn’t elect Donald Trump, the present-day Electoral College system did. So far, more than 1.75 million more Americans voted for the other main candidate, 4.4 million voted for Johnson, and 1.4 million more voted for Stein. Even if we have to accept these skewed results, let’s not rewrite history. The problems of our country, our planet, and our communities require an honest assessment and for us all to admit the situation we are facing, together, is complicated.
