DEERFIELD — When a barn caught fire on South Mill River Road on Monday afternoon, it was two South Deerfield firefighters who live nearby that came to the scene and started putting out the fire with a garden hose before the first fire truck arrived.

South Deerfield Fire Chief William Swasey said Lt. Patricia Patterson and Deputy Chief Dennis Patterson were first on the scene and were able to use the garden hose before other units could take over.

Swasey said the fire started shortly after 4 p.m. and was under control within 10 minutes. It began when a lawn mower caught fire within the barn.

South Deerfield, Sunderland and Greenfield responded. The barn was attached to the house, and the firefighters checked the house for any signs the fire had spread.

No people or livestock were injured.
