LEVERETT — A man was taken to the hospital after a serious rollover accident on Route 63, near the Sunderland border, Friday evening around 5:30 p.m.
State Police Sgt. John Ruyffelaert said the unidentified driver, who he said had “serious injuries,” was the only person in the car and “looks like he hit a guardrail,” losing control of the vehicle.
Initially, the dispatcher noted that the driver of the car was possibly trapped, but wasn’t clear if the accident had happened in Sunderland or Leverett.
About 10 minutes later, emergency responders called for a LifeFlight emergency airlift, designating the Elementary School as the helicopter’s landing zone. However, that was soon called off, and, instead, at least one person was transported via Amherst EMS to Baystate Springfield — with the help of town firefighters.
The Leverett Police Department shut down the road almost immediately between Depot and Montague roads, diverting cars appropriately, and called for the State Police Reconstruction team.
At the scene around 6:30 p.m., both Leverett police and fire departments declined to comment about what happened and said to contact state police.
Rescue workers from the State Police, Leverett, Shutesbury, and Sunderland were called to help out.
State Police is currently investigating.
