In his first try at electoral politics, Pittsfield Democrat and Buckland native Adam Hinds appears to have won a two-year state Senate seat Tuesday, defeating Lanesborough Republican Christine Canning to take the seat being vacated after 10 years by Pittsfield Democrat Benjamin Downing.

Results at presstime were incomplete, but he appeared to be winning by a 3-1 margin in the nine Franklin County towns in the district and by a greater than 2-1 margin in the district’s Berkshire County base.

The 52-community Berkshire-Hampshire-Franklin-Hampden District includes Ashfield, Conway, Shelburne, Buckland, Charlemont, Hawley, Heath, Rowe and Monroe in Franklin County.

Hinds has served as executive director of the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition and was founding director of Pittsfield Community Connection.

“I’m thrilled to have the trust of the residents of the district,” said Hinds Tuesday night, and very excited to be transitioning from campaigning to roll up my sleeves for the real work ahead. I feel very good about it.
