Much of the debate around Question 3 has focused on the impact of the measure on Diemand Farms. But that’s missing the forest through the trees. I do believe Diemand should catch up to every other egg producer in Massachusetts by ending its confinement of animals in small wire cages.

Question 3 would give the facility until 2022 to phase out their already-old cages. But the more pressing concern is that corporate “factory farms” across the country confine animals in cruel, unhygienic conditions before selling their meat and eggs to Massachusetts consumers.

Many of these facilities allot each egg-laying hen less space than the dimensions of an iPad, while female pigs and newborn calves are often locked for months in crates so small they can’t turn around.

This abuse not only violates our values but puts our families at risk. Extensive evidence shows that extreme confinement increases the prevalence of dangerous bacteria like Salmonella.

Question 3 would simply require that eggs or meat sold or produced here come from animals with enough space to stand up, turn around and extend their limbs.

It’s truly that modest, but the benefits for both Massachusetts residents and animals would be major. Question 3 deserves a “Yes” vote on Nov. 8. It is the very least we can do!
