Rethreads, one of Shelburne Falls’ longest-running shops, could be closed by year’s end, unless someone comes forward to buy the business.

“The store has been here for 38 years, and I’ve had the store for 18 years,” says Leisha Eaton, who owns it with her husband, Mark. “I feel like I’ve run my course with it.”

The consignment and used-clothing shop at 14 Bridge St. was started by a group of young mothers in 1978, who were looking for part-time work.

The shop was sold to Robert Gedutis in 1986, who ran it with Marilyn Griswold until 1999, when the Eatons bought it.

Today, Rethreads has about 4,000 people on its list of consigners. Besides quality used-clothing for men, women and children, the shop sells many new items — socks, tights, winter caps and boutique items — for less than half of what you’d spend in a “new” store.

“I just hope somebody comes forward. We’ve had a few inquiries,” said Eaton, who has 14 grandchildren.

The Eatons say the shop will remain open through the Christmas season in hopes of transferring ownership to someone new.

“In the event no one comes forward, it will be with great sorrow the business will close at the start of the new year,” they said on the shop’s Facebook page. Mark Eaton declined to name an asking price for the business, which is in a leased storefront.

Those interested in acquiring it may call Mark Eaton at 413-522-1731.

The store hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
