One, two, three, title.
Mohawk Trail Regional High School garnered the top three overall spots to clinch the win early and eventually posted a 24-32 victory over Greenfield High School to win the Pioneer North Division girls’ cross country title Tuesday afternoon at Highland Park in Greenfield.
Both schools posted 15-50 win over St. Mary’s Parish School of Westfield, which was unable to field a full team.
It was the fourth consecutive league title for the Warriors (11-0, 6-0) since realignment placed all local teams in the same division with St. Mary’s, Granby High School and and McCann Technical School.
“Our record shows we’re undefeated in the league over those four years, but we’ve had some close meets,” said Warriors’ Hall-of-Fame head coach Joe Chadwick. “We’ve also had some (like today) where we’ve had to take 1-2-3.
“It was our fourth meet in 10 days,” he added “The kids have taken on a heavy load, and they labored a bit (today), but they got the job done and I’m really proud of them.
Sophomore Meghan Davis led the Mohawk charge by winning the 3.1-mile race in 20 minutes, 35 seconds. Teammate Jackie Wells — just an eighth-grader — followed close behind in 20:57 to put the Warriors in a prime position for the win, even though Greenfield’s depth was expected to play a factor.
It never materialized, as Mohawk junior Lily Wells crossed the line in 21:18 to clinch the title.
Greenfield took the next three spots — Jamie Day finished in 22:55, followed by Amy O’Sullivan in 22:58 and Jenna Silk in 24:22.
The Warriors’ Clarissa Pollard came in seventh in 25:55, and Greenfield’s Johanna Guiod (25:58), Courtney Danielson (25:59) and Sarah O’Sullivan (26:18) completed the top 10.
The Green Wave completed its dual-meet season at 10-1 and 5-1.
“The girls were really relieved after the meet, they were worried about Greenfield,” said Chadwick. “Stu (Elliot, Greenfeld coach) has done a great job with them. He’s got a good group of girls.”
Mohawk and Greenfield gears up for the postseason, which begins on Oct. 29 with the PVIAC Championships at Stanley Park in Westfield. The Western Mass. Championships are on Nov. 13, also at Stanley Park.
