William Cullen Bryant was a 19th-century poet, a progressive voice in New York politics, the editor of the New York Evening Post, and was integral to getting Abraham Lincoln on the ticket for president and to creating Central Park in New York.

But he was also a Cummigton boy.

And back to Cummington he went, transforming his childhood two-story Colonial home, which his grandfather built, into a three-story Victorian beauty.

On Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m., those interested in what the Bryants ate in that home can learn firsthand in a 19th Century Cooking & Tasting class that features recipes from Sarah Snell Bryant’s “receipt book.” Food to be prepared includes pounded cheese, hasty pudding and flannel cakes. Vegetarians are welcome.

Sturbridge Village Manager of Historic Floodways, Ryan Beckman will teach the class. RSVP required. For information call The Trustees of Reservations at 413-628-4485, ext. 3, or email acaluori@thetrustees.org. The cost is $24 for members and $30 for non-members.

Before, tours of the home and the property, now owned by the Trustees of Reservations, will be held at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.

The William Cullen Bryant Homestead is at  207 Bryant Road, Cummington. 413-628-4485, ext. 3. acaluori@thetrustees.org
