Frontier Regional School held the upper hand from a statistical and a possession standpoint, but the Red Hawks were unable to find the back of the net and settled for a 0-0 independent field hockey draw against West Springfield High School Wednesday night at Clark Field in West Springfield.
In a battle of squads expected to contend for Western Massachusetts Tournament titles in their divisions, the Red Hawks (10-1-1) held a 9-3 shot advantage and a 4-3 edge in corners. However, Terriers goalkeeper Chloe Pastore was equal to the challenge, rejecting all 9 shot she faced.
Frontier goalie Skyla Burniske turned aside all three shots she faced to record the shutout against West Side (5-1-5).
“The girls played well,” said Red Hawks head coach Missy Mahar. “Being on turf was nice. We executed the possession style of play we were looking for, and the midfield helped generate our offense within the offensive 25 (-yard line). I think (turf) plays to some of our strengths. We generated some good scoring chances, but (Pastore) made some great saves.”
