GREENFIELD — Goodies Restaurant on Federal Street, whose owner has pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion and faces sentencing Friday, has been sold to a new owner.
According to a quitclaim deed filed with the Franklin County Registry of Deeds, three parcels of land the restaurant sits on at 254-256 Federal St. and 8 Linden Ave. were sold for $500,000 by Ioanis, Lisa, Panagiotis and Ekaterini Dimitriou of Montague. The new owner is listed as Shri Maruti Ganesh, LLC.
Lalo Patel, who was working in the restaurant Wednesday, said he works for the new owner — a local man with experience running similar restaurants. Patel declined to give the new owner’s name until all the details have been finalized.
“We’re going to make it better and better,” Patel said. “He (has) a passion for food.”
Ioanis Dimitriou, who ran the restaurant for nearly 20 years, pleaded guilty in April to five counts of filing false tax returns over the course of five years, allegedly taking a substantial amount of cash sales from the business, which he did not declare as income. He is scheduled to be sentenced in U.S. District Court in Springfield Friday morning.
Prosecutors alleged that Dimitriou paid only 5 percent of the more than $232,000 in taxes he owed between 2008 and 2012, systematically deleting records from his computer system, but keeping two sets of books that depicted the actual sales of the business and the sales disclosed on his tax returns.
He could face up to three years in prison, one year of supervised release and a fine of $100,000 and restitution, although actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.
Patel said Dimitriou’s son and mother are still working at the restaurant, but wasn’t sure for how much longer.
Dimitriou could not be reached for comment.
