Info night for leaders clubs: Wednesday, Sept. 21, 5:30 p.m. Parents and students can find out on Sept. 21 more about the Y’s two Leaders Clubs. The Junior Leaders Club is for 10- to 12-year olds and the Teen Leaders Club is for 13- to 17-year olds. Both clubs meet on the first and third Wednesdays at 6 p.m. for training, planning and fun. Every club member volunteers each month helping with youth programs and special Y events. The yearly club fee is $25 plus a small amount for the monthly club events. Youth soccer ages 4 to 12:
The YMCA’s three soccer leagues play at the Greenfield Community College fields. Childen ages 4 to 5 meet on Wednesdays, 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. This group learns the basic skills and teamwork
The 6- to 8- and 9- to 12year olds meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. The groups work on progressing skills and learning game strategies. Y facility members fees are $55/$60 and program associate fees are $65/$70. Volunteer coaches are needed; those interested should call Dave at 413-773-3646, ext. 436.
Y preschool registration: The YMCA operates a full-day, 50 weeks per year preschool for children ages 2.9 to 5 years old. Parents can choose from two-, three- and five-day options. Early and late care are available, along with snow day care. The school has two modern classrooms and an outdoor play yard but also utilizes the Y’s pool, gymnastics center and gym. Parents of five-day/50-week enrollees also get a free Silver Family YMCA membership. Call Lisa Jackson, director, at 413-773-3646, ext. 431, to schedule a visit and tour. The school accepts voucher funding and the Y has some financial aid available.
September/October class registration: There is still time to register for classes and programs. Classes are available for people of all ages and abilities. The fees will be pro-rated, and financial aid is available. Youth can register for parent/child gym or swim classes (ages 1 to 5), swimming and gymnastics lessons (ages 3 to 12), soccer and basketball (ages 4 to 12), Jr. Leaders Club (ages 10 to 12) and Teen Leaders Club (ages 13 to18). Adults can register for water therapy/fitness class, strength training, type II diabetes care classes, “Nutrition for a Better You” and more. Tai Chi for Diabetes: Tuesdays, 10:30 am to 1:30 p.m., Y Wellness Center. Tai Chi for Diabetes is easy to learn and will help reduce stress while improving muscle strength, balance, heart/lung function and flexibility.
Created by family physician and Tai Chi master Dr. Paul Lam, to help prevent and improve the control of diabetes (pre-diabetics and diabetics), it is based on the Yang and Sun styles of Tai Chi. Free for Y members and $10 per day for all others.
Children’s Latin Dance & Movement: Saturdays, September through Oct. 29, 11:05 a.m. This class is an exploration of imagination and a celebration of expression for boys and girls ages 2 to 5 years. The children will immerse themselves in awesome music and feel good movement, channeling animals from jungles, farms and the land of fantasy. They will stretch, sing and dance while listening and moving to a diverse selection of music. Fees are $51 for Y members and $62 for Program Associates.
Noodle Cardio Mix: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:15 to 3 p.m., until October 27.This new class features a high energy aqua aerobic workout with hand-held noodles, choreography that provides toning and cardio as well as side lying (supported) movement that challenges the core. Child Watch: The Y provides low cost child care for children ages eight weeks to six years old while their parent is exercising at the Y. The room has fun play stations and the staff conducts age-appropriate activities. The service is available Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Monday through Friday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7:45 to 9:45 a.m. There is a 90-minute maximum per visit.
