Youth Soccer ages 4-12 —The YMCA’s three soccer leagues play at the GCC fields. Ages 4 to 5 meet once a week on Wednesdays from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.; this group starts to learn the basic skills as well as teamwork. The 6-to-8- and 9-to-12-year-olds meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. These two groups work on progressing their skills and learning game strategies. Y facility members fees are $55/60 and Program Associate fees are $65/70. Volunteer coaches are needed; those interested should call Dave at 773-3646, ext 436.
Youth Gymnastics — The YMCA offers progressive gymnastics classes for boys and girls ages 3 to 12 plus a pre-team and competitive team with 10 levels. The first eight-week session of classes begins Sept. 6 to 12. Team evaluations day is Saturday, Sept. 10 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. For more info call Kelly at 773-3646, ext 423.
Y Preschool Registration — The YMCA operates a full-day 50 weeks per year preschool for children ages 2.9 to 5 years old. Parents can choose from two-, three-, and five-day options. Early and/or late care is available along with snow day care. The school has two modern classrooms and an outdoor play yard but also utilizes the Y’s pool, gymnastics center and gym for daily P.E. activities. Parents of 5 day/50 week enrollees also get a free Silver Family YMCA membership. Parents should call Lisa Jackson the schools director at 773-3646, ext 431 to schedule a visit and tour. The school accepts voucher funding and the Y has some financial aid available.
Before/After School Child Care — The Y offers before and after school child care programs for children in K-6th grades from Greenfield, Turners Falls and Gill. The programs are based in the Y’s Game Room/Kid Fit Center but also use the gym for P.E. and the Social Room for homework help. The programs operate all school year including school vacation weeks and snow days. Before care is from 6:15 to 8:30 a.m. and after care is from school dismissal to 6 or 7 p.m. Call Kara at 773-3646, ext 452 with questions or to register. Last school year the program was full so register early. Financial aid is on a first come basis. Voucher funding is accepted.
Sept/Oct Class Registration — Register now for all September/October classes and programs. Classes begin Sept. 6 to 12 for people of all ages and abilities. Youth can register for parent/child gym or swim classes (ages 1 to 5), swimming and gymnastics lessons (ages 3 to 12), soccer and basketball skills (ages 4 to 12), Jr. Leaders Club (ages 10 to 12) and Teen Leaders Club (ages 13 to 18). Adults can register for water therapy/fitness class, strength training, type II diabetes care classes, “Nutrition for a Better You” and more. Nutrition for a Better You — Personalized nutrition education to empower participants to lead healthier lives. Focusing on sustainable long-term change for each individual, Cara Leonard (licensed nutritionist) coaches for general health and weight management, athletic performance and chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. The seven weekly talks will have a different topic; some topics will include what food groups to avoid and what groups to eat, reading nutrition labels and meal prepping for the week. The program includes weekly weigh-ins, tracking steps, weekly food journals, suggested weekly exercise and pre and post measurements. Fees are Y members $89 (includes Nautilus) and Program Associates and non members $169 (includes class and Nautilus).
Two Programs for Veterans — The Y’s Fitlife Center is great for physically inactive individuals who need structure to help them develop or regain the basic physical and behavioral skills to exercise regularly; includes cardiovascular endurance and resistance training. The room is open for veterans only Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. starting Sept. 7. The Y is also offering Basic Strength Training class for learning/ refreshing on the basics of resistance training in a group atmosphere. Gain self-empowering benefits like boosting your metabolic rate, self esteem, improving joint stability, posture and strength. Class takes place in the weight room (which is closed for the class) Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. starting Sept. 6. Class fee waived for veterans.
