GREENFIELD — Community Action’s annual Feed the Belly Bus event collected 4,140 pounds of food and personal care items Friday that will help low income families make ends meet.
The event also brought in $2,780, which will allow for the purchase of about 13,900 more pounds of food, according to Matthew Leger-Small, the organization’s community collaborations and asset development coordinator.
“Our drive was a great success despite the steamy conditions and damp start,” Leger-Small said. “I can’t offer enough thanks to our tireless volunteers, community partners, and all the other Franklin County heroes who helped make this year’s Belly Bus Community Food Drive such a success!”
The goal was to collect tons of food from local businesses, organizations and churches through internal food drives. It will all be given to local agencies for distribution to needy families.
Drop-off locations included Stop & Shop in Greenfield; Food City in Turners Falls; Yankee Candle Village in Deerfield; Foster’s Supermarket in Greenfield and the Greenfield Town Common.
The food will be divvied up among the Franklin County Community Meals Program, the Franklin Area Survival Center, the Greenfield Salvation Army and Community Action’s Center for Self-Reliance to be given to local families.
