We strongly support Attorney General Maura Healey’s independent effort to “plug the loopholes” that allow variations of assault rifles to be sold in Massachusetts.

We don’t see this as inappropriate action on her part but rather an important effort to enforce our current assault rifle ban in Massachusetts.

We have notified Gov. Baker, Attorney General Healy, Rep. Kulik and Sen. Rosenberg about our opinion and encourage others to do the same.

Hundreds of gun supporters assembled and demonstrated in Boston to oppose the attorney general’s action, but there are many, many of us who are sick at heart over the out-of-control sales and use of military-style assault weapons in this country.

We need to hold the line in Massachusetts as a witness to the nation.
