Don’t underplay Clinton

On Tuesday night, July 26, delegates at the Democratic National Convention took the historic step of choosing Hillary Clinton to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for president of the United States.

Secretary Clinton’s gender is not her primary qualification. Yet, whether someone has been in her camp or Senator Sanders’ camp during the primary season, the historical significance of Clinton’s nomination cannot be overstated.

Whatever you think of her, she is the first woman to be nominated by one of our two major political parties.

I ask, in light of the newsworthiness of this event, why does her achievement merit only a below-the-fold Associated Press article on page one, referring to an “emotional boost from Bill,” while The Recorder’s article about disgruntled Bernie supporters appears in the more prominent above-the-fold position? In my opinion this was an irresponsible choice.

It’s time to recognize that, in the words of Lin-Manuel Miranda, history has its eyes on Hillary.
