SOUTH DEERFIELD — Rescue workers shut down a section of Conway Road as they responded to a deadly accident between a dump truck and a green Toyota pickup on that stretch of Route 116 Thursday afternoon.
According to a press release from the Deerfield Police Department, the 24-year-old woman driving the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the dump truck was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
One eyewitness, who declined to be identified, said that after hearing two loud bangs, he saw a pickup that had been crushed by a dump truck in what appeared to be a head-on crash.
Town firefighters and South County EMS were called to the crash, which happened near 164 Conway Road. Rescue workers shut down Route 116 just before the Whately Road turn-off, near the Interstate 91 exit, and South Mill River Road on the other side, immediately after the accident happened about 12:30. The area was still being cleaned up around 3, when the state medical examiner’s office was seen leaving the scene.
Hours after the crash, investigators from the State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the Northwest District Attorney’s Office, among other state agencies, had roped off a large section of grass around the pickup, which was sitting perpendicular to the road.
No other information was available from town police, who referred inquiries to the district attorney’s staff, from whom details were not immediately available.
