NORTHFIELD — Northfield Police and EMTs last week used Narcan to save the life of a 56-year-old woman who overdosed on opioid medication.

Northfield Police responded on Wednesday to a report of a woman who was not breathing, according to the department’s official Facebook page.

The officer quickly assessed the person and determined that she had overdosed on opioid medication and assisted Northfield EMS in administering Narcan, a medication that reverses the effect of opioid overdoses.

“The town of Northfield has not been missed by the opiate epidemic which plagues all of New England. All indications are that these critical emergencies will continue and possibly become more common as our community struggles with this tragic and dangerous trend,” the post read.

“Officers of the Northfield Police Department have been trained in this life-saving intervention and we work closely with Northfield EMS to keep our community safe from the tragic consequences of opioid abuse and overdose,” it continued.
