ASHFIELD — Several fire departments responded to a reported house fire at 2043 Hawley Road on Tuesday afternoon, helping to minimize fire damage.

Homeowner Brendan Burns said the fire began in the attic around 12:30 p.m., and he had used a fire extinguisher on the flames before firefighters arrived and put out the rest of the smoldering fire.

“They got here really quick,” he said. “Most of the fire was out.”

He said about 40 firefighters and other responders came out to assist.

Burns was interviewed at home after the fire. He said damage was confined to a section of the roof and attic, and that he and his family were able to remain in the house, despite needed repair.

The Ashfield fire chief could not be reached for comment.
