Bay State Games
The West field hockey team captured gold at the Bay State Games at the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex in Waltham over the weekend.
Local girls Ashley Borkowski and Christina Lively participated on the gold-medal winning team and played roles in the medal-clinching victory, a 3-1 win over previously unbeaten Metro/Northeast in the championship game. Borkowski, from Frontier Regional School, had an assist in the victory, while Lively, from Mohawk Trail Regional High School, made a defensive save, one of two for her on the weekend.
The West opened play in the tournament on Friday with a 1-1 tie against Central, the two-time defending gold-medal winners, and then went on to defeat Coastal, 5-0. The West suffered its only loss of the tournament on Saturday when it fell to Metro/Northeast, 2-1, but West came back to knock off Southeast, 2-0, to qualify for the gold-medal game, which gave it the rematch with Metro/Northeast. Coastal went on to beat Central in the third-place game.
The West had to overcome not only the opponents all weekend but also the heat factor on the artificial turf playing field, which made it 10 degrees warmer than the already 90-plus degree heat. The game against Southeast was actually shortened by five minutes due to recommendations by the medical staff after one player from Southeast left the field physically sick from the heat.
This is the third year Lively competed with the team and she won a bronze medal her first year, then a silver medal last year, while Borkowski is in her second year with the team and also has last year’s silver medal. Lively also served as captain for the West during the gold medal game.
