GREENFIELD — The town’s Planning and Construction Committee will hold a public hearing on the naming of the new Senior/Community Center Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in the Planning Office, 114 Main St.

In April, Town Council Vice President Isaac Mass requested the building be named the John A. Zon Jr. Community Center after a man who he called “a tireless advocate for seniors, veterans and young people in Greenfield.”

Mass said that is the only name that has been sent to the committee so far.

Greenfield’s ordinance on naming requires the committee to hold a public hearing and send a recommendation to Town Council. After receiving that recommendation, the council will vote on the name.

According to Mass, the council cannot vote on any other name without reinitiating the entire process.

“I expect a positive recommendation from Planning and Construction as this has pretty much universal support,” Mass wrote in an email Monday.

He previously told The Recorder that Zon, who died in 2012 at the age of 89, epitomized service and commitment to the community, and that his name will be a symbol to all that the new building is truly a community center and a place where seniors are welcome.

Town Council will likely vote on the name during its August meeting.
