DEERFIELD — Wilver Perez, 30, of Guatemala, has been identified as the victim in a drowning incident Saturday, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
Deerfield Police Department said Saturday that Deerfield, Greenfield and Turners Falls firefighters, South County Emergency Medical Services and Deerfield Police officers responded to the emergency on McClelland Farm Road in Deerfield around 12:37 p.m.
Perez was pulled from the Connecticut River Saturday and transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, where he was pronounced dead around 2 p.m.
The incident occurred just east of the General Pierce Bridge, where the Deerfield River feeds into the Connecticut River, said Mary Carey, a spokeswoman from the District Attorney’s office, at the time.
“We believe he was swimming with some other friends and apparently got into some deep water,” said Capt. Leon Ambo of the Turners Falls Fire Department told The Recorder Saturday.
The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office said Sunday Perez was caught in an eddy or circular current of water and pulled under. No foul play is suspected.
The incident is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office and Deerfield Police Department. The cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, according to Sunday’s release.
