DEERFIELD — “Has the stone soldier in the back started tapping his foot?” asked Carlson Barrett, conductor of the Westmoreland Town Band from New Hampshire, during a patriotic brass band performance.

Patriotic tunes filled the Deerfield Teachers’ Center Hall Monday afternoon during the concert, which was sponsored by the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association.

The hall, which is behind the Old Town Hall, was filled to capacity for the event honoring the nation’s 240th birthday.

“It’s a gift to the town. The band has been here going on 30 years,” said Timothy Neumann, PVMA executive director for the association.

According to Neumann, the theme of the event was “serenading the Civil War soldier,” in honor of a stone statue being temporarily kept in the hall for safe keeping.

The band, which was made up of more than 20 musicians, performed patriotic pieces such as “The Air Force Song” and “The Star Spangled Banner.”

The audience also enjoyed more classic tunes such as “This Land is Your Land,” “A Bicycle Built for Two,” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
