GREENFIELD — Several children and a few adults are in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Monday after a T-bone collision on Route 2 in front of Big Y just before 7 p.m.

According to a bystander who was in front of the store about 30 minutes after the accident happened, a white Subaru driving east toward the traffic circle, was turning right into the plaza when it was struck by a silver Honda traveling west.

“The white car came from the other side, and the (silver car) was going straight,” said Patrick Lathrop, who was parked in his truck at the stoplight near Friendly’s and saw the accident happen.

Lathrop used his truck to block the entrance of the store. An off-duty firefighter from New Britain, Conn., also stopped to help out.

Initially, rescue workers responded thinking the cars were driving toward each other when they crashed, after someone called 911 about a head-on collision; however, Fire Department Lt. Keith Gamage, officer in charge at the scene, said that wasn’t the case.

“It was reported as a head-on collision,” he said, “but it was a T-bone.”

Gamage said everyone involved was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes and bruises. He said that none of the injuries were serious, and no extrication equipment was needed to help passengers out of the cars.

The department responded with two engines, a rescue truck and a utility truck. Three ambulances and police also responded to the scene.

Police would not comment on the accident at the scene, but did say the incident is under investigation.
