NORTHFIELD — Two drivers were transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center after a motor vehicle collision on Main Street shortly before 12:45 p.m. Friday.

Ralph Bates, 23, of Swanzey, N.H., was traveling south in a white GMC Sierra when he stopped for a pedestrian at a crosswalk.

Krysten Grant, 24, of Winchester, N.H., was driving behind Bates in a silver Toyota Corolla with an 8-year-old child in the back seat. Grant was distracted by a dog in her vehicle, failed to see that Bates’ vehicle had stopped and crashed into the truck’s bumper.

“Her vehicle looks like it’s going to be totaled,” said Northfield Police Sgt. John Richardson. “She struck at full speed.”

Both vehicles were towed and Grant was cited for following too closely. Grant and Bates were both transported to the hospital by Northfield Emergency Medical Services.

“(Bates) had abdominal pain and (Grant) struck her head on the windshield,” Richardson said.

No other details were available from Baystate about the drivers’ conditions.
