GREENFIELD — A student who was arrested following an altercation at Greenfield High School in early May — triggering a shelter-in-place order just before dismissal — resisted repeated requests by the school resource officer to leave school grounds with another adult, a police arrest report shows.
The report, obtained by The Recorder through a public records request, shows that school staff made numerous verbal attempts to de-escalate the situation with the student. The student continued to become more irritated, and the school’s resource officer eventually felt compelled to restrain and arrest the student, the arrest report shows.
In the report, identifying information about the student was redacted to maintain his privacy. By state law, names of juveniles charged with crimes are withheld from the public.
The Recorder sought the police report because police and school officials at the time withheld details of the incident that had created concern among some parents amid reports of a “lockdown” and subsequent evacuation of the school.
The incident followed an altercation between two students, both of whom were being suspended for two days. Details regarding the nature of that underlying incident were not available in the arrest report.
Superintendent Jordana Harper previously told The Recorder that no students or staff were injured, and Greenfield Police Chief Robert Haigh Jr. said no weapons of any sort were involved.
The shelter-in-place order was issued to keep the school’s other students calm and to maintain privacy for the students involved in the altercation, officials have said. Students were dismissed from the school that day through side entrances, because the agitated student who was arrested was at the front entrance at the time.
