GREENFIELD — A Greenfield man has been ordered held at the Franklin County Jail for his part in a fight that left several people injured on Riverside Drive early Wednesday morning.
Sandy Moya, 42, of Riverside Drive was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon — a broken bottle. A juvenile involved in the fight was also arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a pipe.
Moya was arraigned Wednesday in Greenfield District Court, where he was ordered held at the jail pending his next court appearance.
The fight happened around 2:40 a.m. in a Riverside Drive residence. Greenfield Police responding to reports of a stabbing in the area found a group of 12 to 15 people in the street, who all began yelling and pointing at each other when officers approached.
Police encountered Moya, who was covered in blood with cuts to his face and stomach, and two teenagers soon approached. Police initially thought they were coming to check on Moya, but instead they began trying to pick a fight with him, court records show.
Police tried to control the pair, but had to arrest one when he tried to push past them, and they threatened to use a Taser on the other to get him to stop.
Witnesses told police Moya and a group of friends had been at the residence drinking and talking when Moya allegedly began making sexual comments about a woman whom they knew.
The resident’s son, identified as Anthony Rios, apparently took offense and began yelling at Moya to leave the house before the two allegedly began brawling in the kitchen with broken bottles. Two other, younger, residents came downstairs and joined the fray, according to the report.
The fight moved outside, and Moya was allegedly struck with a pole by one of the younger combatants. The person, a juvenile, was later arrested in connection with that act. Police were called when Moya went to another neighbor’s house asking for help.
Moya and Rios were transported to the hospital, and Rios was later transferred to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
Two other people involved in the fight are expected to be charged with assault and battery for punching others.
