Jon Huntley’s single brought home Colin Blake with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Westfield Post 124 get past Greenfield Post 81, 4-3, in a Hampden County American Legion Baseball game Wednesday night at Bullens Field in Westfield.
Blake had started the frame by reaching on an error. Stephan Krol sacrificed him to second, then Huntley came up and ripped shot down past diving third baseman Noah Barnes and down the left-field line to plate Blake standing up for the winner.
Westfield improved to 9-2 in the league.
Post 81 (8-5 overall, 6-5 league) had managed just one hit off Krol in the first five innings and trailed 3-0 before coming alive in the sixth to pull even.
With one out, Nate Crocker reached on an infield single to deep short. Julian Diamond then hit a hard grounder to third, but the throw to second was dropped and both runners were safe. After a flyout, Tyler Charboneau slashed a double to right-center field to plate both runners and make it 3-2, then Gavan Rice laced a single to right-center that brought Charboneau home to tie the score.
Jeremy Mankowsky had the only other hit for Greenfield.
Matt Hasting ripped an RBI single in the second inning for Westfield’s first run. It scored on an error in the third, and Huntley’s sacrifice fly in the fifth gave Westfield its third run.
John Daley struck out two and walked no one in the seventh to earn the win in relief. Krol fanend nine and walked one in the first six innings.
“(Krol) mixed his pitches well but we didn’t have very many quality at-bats,” said Post 81 head coach Tim Capuano.
Charboneau suffered the loss in relief. He had one strikeout and one walk in 1 innings.
“I liked what I saw in sixth but we’re not very consistent right now as far as overall effort,” said Capuano. “The kids have it in them and I’m waiting for that to happen and am confident it will.”
Greenfield travels to East Longmeadow Friday at 5:45 p.m.
