GREENFIELD — A Newton School first-grader has been named one of 10 students from a field of 2,500 statewide chosen as a finalist in the Massachusetts School Building Authority’s My Ideal School contest.
Savannah Glenn, a student in teacher Mickey Warren’s class, was recently honored during a ceremony in Boston.
Warren said she’s entered her students’ work in the contest for the past decade, and this is the first time one of them has been named a finalist.
The contest’s grand prize winner, Marlee Thrasher of Somerville will have her drawing featured on the organization’s annual report.
Savannah also wrote an essay for the contest:
“Have you ever been to my school?” she wrote. “Newton School is awesome because it has great teachers! First, we learn math by playing games and using counters. Second, we learn to read the proper way by lots and lots of practice! Last, we learn how to hula hoop with a really nice teacher! And that’s why my School is the best!”
Savannah told The Recorder she avidly draws both in school and at home. She like to depict her cats, Bosco and Mittens, and people receiving gifts or surprises.
“We’re very proud of Savannah and all her hardwork,” said Newton School principal Melodie Goodwin.
