BUCKLAND — A 28-year-old Greenfield man was arrested on several firearm-related charges after police say he fired shots into his ex-girlfriend’s residence Friday night.
Ryan Bete of Cleveland Street was arraigned in Greenfield District Court Tuesday on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, attempted assault and battery with a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, discharging a firearm near a highway and carrying a firearm while intoxicated. He was ordered held at the Franklin County jail following the arraignment.
According a report by Buckland police officer Kurt Gilmore, officers were dispatched to a home on Gardner Falls Road in Buckland just before 8:40 p.m. Friday for a report of shots fired into a residence. The reporting party said they head one shot fired then another three to four, and saw a silver sedan drive up the road.
The homeowners told police their daughter had been in the shower attached to her bedroom above the garage and came downstairs to tell them something had blown up her wall, according to the report. Gilmore wrote a small hole was visible in the shingles of the roof, which appeared to have a projectile come from the outside.
The alleged victim’s mother told police she had heard a shot come from near the bottom of the driveway and saw a gray sedan drive up the road slowly, stop, and then saw the flash from a gun as a party inside the vehicle fired another shot, according to the report.
The couple said they didn’t know anyone who would have done something like that, and Gilmore asked their daughter whether she had a boyfriend or ex-boyfriend who could be responsible. She said she had two boyfriends within the last year and had recently broken up with one, who she identified as Bete, according to the report.
Gilmore wrote he requested state police detectives and the Crime Scene Unit respond to the scene. He also recalled seeing a gray Hyundai sedan drive down Gardner Falls Road and not come back, and asked officers to go to the end of the road to check for the vehicle, according to the report.
Officers located the vehicle parked at the end of the road and found Bete sitting on the ground behind a metal gate with a handgun on the ground in front of him, according to the report. He was ordered to come out with his hands visible and was placed under arrest. While escorting him to the cruiser, Gilmore wrote he could smell a distinct odor of alcohol coming from Bete, who later admitted to drinking three 16-ounce beers before the incident.
According to the report, officers could see an open can of beer in the vehicle’s cup holder and a spent shell casing on the floor. Bete was transported to the Buckland police station for booking, where he told officers he couldn’t remember what happened and had blacked out, according to the report.
Gilmore wrote during an interview with state police, Bete admitted he had been outside his ex-girlfriend’s residence and had a .45-caliber Ruger handgun in his possession. According to the report, he told the trooper he had arrived outside the residence with the intent of shooting himself, but when he tried to load the gun in his vehicle, it jammed. When he attempted to clear the jam, Bete the gun fired accidentally, according to the report.
Gilmore wrote Bete told police he panicked and drove up the road, where he accidentally discharged the gun again.
He was ordered held without bail at the Franklin County jail following his arrest and arraignment, and is due back in court June 6 for a dangerousness hearing.
