Y walking Health Challenge for teams of 5: This health challenge is a six-week (mostly walking) program where teams of five friends, co-workers and family help each other to increase their daily activities (steps) striving to reach 10,000 steps per day per team member. The steps are tracked on the walkfranklincounty.org website. The challenge is for low to mid level exercisers. There is a $15 per person fee payable at the YMCA. Summer Memberships Available: The Y offers two types of summer memberships valid from May through September 3. Both memberships are offered at special prices perfect for anyone back in the area for the summer or someone who wants to give the Y a try. The Silver membership includes over 50 group exercise classes per week, strength and cardio machines, lap pool, Jacuzzi, basketball and pickleball at scheduled times. All exercise areas are air conditioned. Prices start at $49 for high school students and $69 for 19- to 24-year-olds; adult, senior and family prices are also available. Ballroom Dancing: Every Wednesday the YMCA is offering ballroom dance lessons from 7:30 to 8 p.m. followed by D.J. dance music from 8 to 9 .pm. People can come with a partner or by themselves; there will be dance partners available. All of the ballroom dances will be taught (swing, foxtrot, waltz, samba, 2-step, etc.), No experience necessary. Please wear indoor “soft soled” shoes. Y members are free and drop-ins are $5 per person.

Apex Specialty Themes: During a 10-week summer, Camp Apex offers four two-week themes and two one-week camps. In addition Apex has nine one-week specialty themes for 8- to 14-year-olds. The “specialty” part of the day is from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and regular Apex activities from 12:30 to 4. The specialty themes include flag football, Star Wars, field hockey, cartoon art, LEGO 1 & 2, soccer, outdoor wilderness, cooking and fall conditioning. Parents can mix and match different Y camps and themes to create a unique, exciting summer for their children. Some camp financial aid is available. Camp Financial Aid: Each summer the YMCA makes it possible for hundreds of children from lower income homes to go to its four summer camps. Over $50,000 in financial aid is provided due to the generosity of donors to the Y’s Kids-to-Camp Golf Tournament, Annual Campaign and the United Way of Franklin County. The Y has camps for children ages 4 to 14; this includes indoor camps and outdoor camps, half-day camps and full-day camps with early and late care available. Diabetes Prevention Program: The YMCA is holding two free informational sessions for its next YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program series. This yearlong program is for people who have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic. The goal of the program is to help people avoid becoming a type 2 diabetic through weight loss and increased weekly activity. The info sessions are on Wednesday, June 15 and Thursday June 16 from 4 to 5 p.m. The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program uses the CDC approved curriculum and is part of the CDC led National Diabetes Prevention Program.
