DEERFIELD – A Florence man is facing charges of operating under the influence of an intoxicating substance after he allegedly smoked a joint before leaving work, failed to stop at a stop sign and was then arrested.

According to the Deerfield Police Department’s official Facebook page, Officer Brent Griffin saw a vehicle pull out of Yankee Candle Way at 2:20 a.m. and pass a stop sign without stopping.

Griffin pulled the driver over and noticed that he appeared to be under the influence of marijuana. The driver allegedly told Griffin that he had smoked a full joint at 2:15 a.m. in the parking lot when he got out of work before beginning his commute home.

Officer Jennifer Bartak assisted, and the officers determined he was, indeed, under the influence of marijuana, according to the Facebook post. He was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs, failing to stop for a stop sign, lights violations and possession of a dangerous weapon – a 30-inch-long sword.

The man was not identified, and Deerfield police could not immediately be reached for comment.

He will be arraigned Friday in Greenfield District Court.
