BERNARDSTON — Is there a future nurse or doctor among the boys and girls of Bernardston Elementary School?
Some of them might find out on Friday, when Baystate Franklin Medical Center’s “Blood and Guts” program will give them a chance to examine real X-rays, touch human bones and learn more about nutrition.
The event, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., is free and open to students, their friends and families.
The program is designed to increase the students’ understanding of human anatomy and reduce fears about hospitals. The program will be administered by staff from the hospital, as well as students from Greenfield Community College’s nursing program and Holyoke Community College’s radiology program.
“It’s always fun to see how totally involved everyone gets,” said Beth Palmquist, the clinical instructor for the hospital’s radiology and imaging department. “From the children to the parents, even our own staff. The parents get right in there with the kids on all the hands-on activities.”
