MONTAGUE — About 30 years in the making, the stretch of road on Greenfield Road from Poplar Street to Hatchery Road, about two miles, is undergoing a major renovation.

The road is closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays through the end of July. Residents who live on the street and emergency vehicles will still have access, Tom Bergeron, DPW superintendent, said.

“That project has been in the works forever,” said Town Administrator Frank Abbondanzio, explaining that the roadwork has been postponed since the 1980s. Recessions over the years put the breaks on the project.

“It’s just been a continuing struggle to get that road done. It’s been a headache for many years,” Abbondanzio said.

The roadwork will cost about $5.5 million, which is funded by the Massachusetts DOT, Bergeron said.

Last year, the town completed a similar renovation on the south end of Greenfield Road.
