GREENFIELD — Greenfield Police confiscated a BB gun from a man who motorists reported shot at their vehicles on High Street Friday afternoon, a weapon they said could have easily been mistaken for real revolver.
The man, who was not identified in a post about the incident on the department’s official Facebook page, was cooperative with officers upon their arrival and the incident was handled without force.
But the gun, police warned, looked extremely realistic and the incident had the potential to turn deadly under other circumstances.
“This very realistic gun got our officer’s attention,” read the post, which was accompanied by a photo of the gun. “Our officers have to make life and death decisions based on their perceptions, often in fractions of seconds, at the time of an incident. It would be devastating to any officer to be forced to use lethal force based on a realistic-looking BB gun.”
The man will be issued a court summons on a charge of discharging a BB gun into, from or across a roadway.
