COLRAIN — Once again, Colrain has a gas station and an all-purpose convenience store, now that Catamount Country Store has set up shop at 133 Main Road — the site of the former “Super Gas” complex.
“Everyone in town has been dying for this store to open,” said co-owner Laurie Giard, whose family applied for a permit last fall to re-establish a convenience store, gas station and to use the garage at that site. The Giards also own and operate Catamount Lawn and Property Services and have several accounts throughout Colrain, including the Town Office property.
Laurie Giard estimates that Colrain town center has been without a gas station or grocery store for at least three years.
The store interior has been freshly renovated, and work is ongoing to add a kitchen, so that deli sandwiches, hot soups and chili can be offered, along with daily specials.
“A lot of locals are asking for breakfast sandwiches and for hot dogs. So those are some of the things coming.”
The business had a “soft” opening on March 25, but a grand opening is planned for early May.
Along with ready-to-eat foods, eggs, milk and lunch meats, the Giards will be offering some local food items, such as local farm-raised beef, their own maple syrup, and eventually their own homemade jams and jellies. “We will try to pull in local products,” she said.
Besides beer and wine, Catamount sells Wheel-View Farm Hard Cider, and will soon be selling beers from Colrain’s own Stoneman Brewery. Giard said Catamount is planning a grand opening in May.
For now, the store is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The phone number is 624-9611.
