LEYDEN — The driver of a pickup that flipped and rolled over when traveling south on Greenfield Road around a curve last week has been arraigned and released on bail.
The driver, 70-year-old John Chapin, walked away from the accident March 13 with minor cuts and bruises. His vehicle, a 2003 Ford F150 truck, was severely damaged. The vehicle ended up upside down and in the wrong lane, after the driver drove into a guardrail and slid about 123 feet on its roof, police said.
The tow company took about a half hour to remove the vehicle and gather debris.
“It was just pieces everywhere,” said Leyden Police Chief Dan Galvis. Gasoline was spilled all over the road. The impact of the accident tore the gas cap from the vehicle. The truck’s cap flew off and items in the bed of the truck were spilled. Pieces of the truck’s bed had been ripped off. A wheel appeared to no longer be attached to the axle, Galvis said.
A section of the road was closed for about an hour, after police arrived about 6 p.m. Firefighters responded about 20 minutes later.
The driver, of Guilford, Vt., declined medical treatment. He was arraigned in Greenfield District Court Friday on charges of driving without a license, speeding, driving to endanger, and veering out of marked lanes.
