MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont House has passed a bill to “ban the box“— barring employers from asking about an applicant’s criminal history on a job application form.
Supporters say the question still could be asked on an interview, but they want to lessen the chances that employers decline to interview someone based on a yes answer to the question about criminal convictions.
The measure won preliminary approval on Thursday by a vote of 138 to 5, and a final OK on a voice vote Friday. It now goes to the Senate.
Gov. Peter Shumlin supports the measure. Last year, he signed an executive order to ban the box for most state jobs.
