Children’s book author/illustrator and Newbery Honor winner Grace Lin will deliver the annual Barbara Elleman Research Library Lecture.
Lin will share personal experiences to illustrate the poignant points of Rudine Sims Bishop’s 1990 seminal essay of multicultural children’s literature, “Mirrors, Windows and Sliding Glass Doors.” Lin, who recently filmed a TED talk in Natick on this topic, will share how some of her personal experiences, including growing up in the only Asian-American family in her neighborhood in upstate New York, have shaped her approach to her work.
The lecture series features the country’s preeminent scholars, book collectors, researchers, editors, authors and illustrators in children’s literature.

Local writer Catherine Newman will read from her new book, Catastrophic Happiness. The event is sponsored by the Amherst College’s Creative Writing Center.
Catherine Newman writes essays, criticism, and fiction, and her work has been published in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, O Magazine, and many other publications. She is the Real Simple etiquette columnist and the author of two memoirs, including Waiting for Birdy, as well as a forthcoming middle-grade novel.
