Westfield State University senior Travon Godette finished 12th in the high jump at the NCAA Division III men’s indoor track & field championships Saturday at Grinnell College in Iowa.

The Mahar Regional School graduate cleared 1.94 meters (6 feet, 4 inches) on his second jump but was unable to clear 1.99 meters on his next three attempts. The senior was seeded 12th for the meet after clearing 2.08 meters (6 feet, 9.75 inches) during an invitational meet at Springfield College earlier this year. That jump broke the previous school record held by Jim Forrest.

Robert Starnes, a sophomore from Wisconsin-Whitewater, won the event by clearing 2.14 meters (7’0.25”).

UMass lax upsets UNC

Freshman Tyler Bogart scored three times and sophomore Dan Dolan tallied a career-high 18 saves to lead UMass to a 14-9 upset of 10th-ranked North Carolina in a men’s lacrosse match Saturday afternoon at Garber Field in Amherst.

Bogart, who’s uncle Paul Jacobs passed away on Wednesday after an extended battle with leukemia, scored twice in the second quarter and once more in the fourth to tally a career high.

Dolan’s 18 saves marked the most by a UMass goalie since the 2013 season when Zach Oliveri also made 18 saves during a 12-11 victory over then No. 4 North Carolina. Dolan stopped eight shots in the first half and then stopped five shots in each of the final two quarters.

Brendan Hegarty, Dan Muller and Ben Spencer each scored twice, while Muller also added two assists. UMass (3-4) scored 49 seconds into the contest and never trailed. UNC (3-3) stormed back to cut the deficit to 7-6 midway through the third quarter, but UMass scored five straight goals to take a 12-6 advantage and went on to register their second win of the season over a ranked opponent.

UMass women top UConn

UMass scored the first nine goals of the game on Saturday to get past 20th-ranked UConn, 15-6, in a women’s lacrosse game at the Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn.

Erika Eipp led all players with four goals for the Minutewomen (5-1), while Holly Turner and Eileen McDonald each scored three times.

UMass led 9-0 before UConn (4-1) finally got on the board with 5 minutes, 37 seconds left in the first half. UMass responded with three of the next four goals and took a 12-2 advantage into the break.

Sam Walters made three saves in the first half  before giving way to Aileen Kelly, who made five saves in the second half.
