The Greenfield YMCA Tumbling Tigers won both the XCEL Gold and Level 6 Divisions during the 2016 Western Area League Gymnastics Championships over the weekend in Greenfield.

Greenfield beat Hampshire, 100.5-67.75 in the XCEL Gold Division as Katie Adams won the bars (8.55) and was third on the beam. Karma Phillips was third on the vault, and Cynsi Roy-Clark was third on the bars and tied for third on the floor.

Sydney Unaitis won the all-around title with a score of 36.45 to help Greenfield edge Westfield, 103.8-103.1 at Level 6. Unaitis also won the bars (9.1), placed second on the beam (9.2) and floor (9.05), and was second on the vault (9.1). Allyson Unaitis won the floor (9.1), placed second on the bars (8.7), and was third all-around. Kendall Fox also placed third on the vault and floor.

Emily Keyes swept the XCEL Platinum Division with wins on vault (8.8), bars (7.7), beam (8.15), floor (8.5) and all-around (33.15). In Level 7, Zenani Himlin-Mayekiso won the vault (9.45), tied for second on the bars (8.2), and finished second on the floor (9.3) and all-around (34.85), while at Level 9, Kayla Hamer swept everything with wins in the vault (8.2), bars (7.4), beam (7.8), floor (8.8) and all-around (32.20).

Greenfield finished fourth as a team at Level 1 as Delia Ekblom won the beam (7.8) and vault (8.85), while Isabella Ekblom was third all-around.

Greenfield was third in the XCEL Silver Division with 101.95 points. Rowan Kehrer was the all-around champion with a score of 34.8 as she won the vault (8.55) and floor (9.0), was second on bars (9.15) and third on the beam. Grayson Bowse was third all-around in the division, placing second on the vault (8.4), tying for second on the floor (8.7), and was third on the bars. Aneesa Brewer was second on the beam (8.65).

Greenfield was fourth at Level 3 with 105.65 points. In the ages 7 and 8 division, Lindsey Taylor won the vault (9.1), bars (8.35), beam (7.9) and all-around (33.95), while placing second on floor (8.6). Layla Fisher was second all-around (33.35) as she won the floor (8.8) and took second on the vault (8.7), bars (8.05) and beam (7.8). Laura Stebbins placed third on the vault, bars, beam, floor and all-around.

Kiarah Pinkham won the floor (9.15) in the age 9 division and placed second on the vault (9.35) and all-around (35.5), and was third on bars. Grace Fisher placed second on the floor (9.1) at age 10, and was third on the vault.

Greenfield was third as a team at Level 4 with 101.1 points. Hannah Phillips was second on the vault (9.05) and third on the beam at ages 8 and 9, while at ages 11 and over, Lanie Bowse tied for first on the beam (9.05) and was second on the bars (8.4), and Rory Cronen-Townsend was third on the vault.

Hockey

J & J Hockey wins title

Sam Knight scored two goals and had one assist Saturday to lead Franklin County Hockey Association J & J Hockey Outlaws to the Greater Springfield League Peewee East Division title with a 3-1 win over Amherst at the Olympia in West Springfield.

Billy Woodall finished with one goal and one assist in the win, while Dylan Mahar had one helper. Matt Lavoine made 18 saves to earn the win.

• In the semifinals Saturday, Knight scored twice, including the game-winner 27 seconds into overtime, as J & J Hockey edged Holy Name Black, 2-1.

Lila Roche and Woodall each had assists in the win.

Holy Name tied the game with 50 seconds left in regulation with the goalie pulled to force overtime. Lavoine picked up the win with a whooping 39 saves.

Roche, Hoffman, Mahar, Shea Savage, Ethyn Clayton, Aydyn Clayton, Josh Bordeaux and Tony Wozny each played well defensively on the day.

Vipers fall in semifinals

Talan Wissmann, Dylan Archer, Ben Carlan, Hunter Smith, Jayson Smith and Brady Booska each played well defensively Sunday but the FCHA Gilmore & Farrell Vipers suffered a 2-0 loss to Amherst Red in the GSL Squirt North Division semifinals at the Olympia.

Lavoine stopped 18 shots in the loss.

• In the consolation game, Eathon Bryant, Trevor Kuchieski, Shane Prusak, Braeden Killeen and Brodie Gagne each had one goal and one assist as the Vipers edged Ludlow, 5-2.

Hunter Smith, Wissmann and Jayson Smith each added assists in the win, and Lavoine stopped 31 shots.

Baseball

Babe Ruth/Mantle signups

The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League  will hold registrations on upcoming dates.

The Franklin County Mickey Mantle team will also have signups at these times. 

The league will be at Greenfield Middle School Wednesday, Thursday and March 23 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m., and will be at Frontier Regional School in South Deerfield on Friday and March 22 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.

Players ages 13 through 15 as of June 1 are eligible to play Babe Ruth, as are 12-year-olds playing school baseball on 90-foot diamonds.

Registration fee is $100 plus $50 for raffle tickets, which the players can recoup.
