BUCKLAND — The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office is now investigating allegations made last week against a Mohawk Trail Regional High School teacher.

In an email sent Monday afternoon to Mohawk school families, Superintendent Michael Buoniconti reported that a teacher was placed on leave last Tuesday, after meeting with the family of a student who had raised a “very serious concern” involving the teacher.

“Mohawk administration contacted the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and the local law enforcement, who in turn contacted the District Attorney’s Office,” Buoniconti said, adding that the DA’s office is now investigating the complaints.

“Please know that Mohawk administration is providing counseling services to impacted students, families and staff,” his email to families continues. “We wish to do everything we can to support our school community during this extraordinarily trying time. Please be assured that the safety of our students is always our highest priority.”

Although Buoniconti’s email to school families does not name the teacher or specify what complaints have been raised, Buoniconti did confirm last Friday a report that social studies teacher Ivan Grail has been placed on leave, that the district is investigating a situation and had contacted local police.

Grail could not be reached for comment Friday or Monday.

Buoniconti wrote to school families: “please understand that my ability to communicate publicly about personnel matters is extremely limited due to legal rights associated with due process. In this instance, I am deliberately leaning forward as much as I can legally, given the needs of our school community.”

When asked to comment, District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Mary Carey said the DA’s office neither confirms nor denies the existence of ongoing investigations.
