Brief thoughts on some of the events making news from around Franklin County and the North Quabbin area:
Orange residents have a chance to go to the polls today to cast votes in the town election, including a race for selectman. While such elections may not generate the buzz or attention that the presidential or statewide offices do, the results from local contests have a more immediate impact on where one lives. We would hope that all eligible residents would head to the Orange Armory today, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. and vote.
Gov. Charlie Baker came out last week and said he would never vote for Donald Trump in November, even if he wins the Republican Party nomination. Baker in demeanor and political thinking is the antithesis of Trump. That’s something that both Republicans and Democrats in Massachusetts can appreciate, especially in terms of governing and getting things done in a bipartisan way.
We’ve never understood the allure of vandalism, such as the incident that recently took place in Hawley, where a kiosk was damaged and a sign for the Abraham Parker Homestead was stolen. While cost-wise we may not be talking about large sums to fix the kiosk and replace the sign, it nevertheless is a senseless waste, one that takes up time and effort to rectify.
Millers Falls’ commercial district is one of those places that leaves visitors wanting to know more, particularly about what it was like during its heyday. While recent years have not necessarily been kind, one can see that potential still exists in some of the buildings. The community is witnessing that right now with properties along East Main Street and while it is taking time, the outcome holds great promise. It’s always good news that there are people who see the potential and are willing to make a serious investment in time, effort and money to revitalize the buildings and, in turn, the area.
