The officials of IAABO Board No. 28 will be hosting the 19th annual All-Star Games March 18 at Messer Gymnasium in Northfield.
The games will feature the senior basketball stars from all Hampshire and Franklin County schools playing in an exciting and fun-filled evening, with the girls’ game starting at 6 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow at approximately 7:30.
Board 28 officials will honor Franklin County Technical School with the Jack Leaman Sportsmanship Award, given to the school whose players, coaches and athletic department staff display outstanding sportsmanship during the year.
IAABO Board 28 Member Donald “Doc” Abel will also be honored with the Tom Cove Award for his long-lasting contributions to the game of basketball in Hampshire and Franklin counties.
Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and free to all active and reserve military with valid ID. Proceeds from this event will benefit the William F. Casey Scholarships, which has provided provided more than $81,000 to area seniors for college since 1982.
Local players on the East girls’ roster include Kelsey Roberts of Greenfield High School and Nadia Hasas of Turners Falls High School, and the West has Emily Casella, Lindsey Hamlett and Callie Jillson of Athol High School; Brittany Andrews of Franklin County Technical School; Mindy Esposito and Jordyn Roberts of Frontier Regional School; Ally Parker and Kianna Whitmore of Mahar Regionao School; Samantha Cairns and Hope Lively of Mohawk Trail Regional High School; and Alyssa Llewelyn and Amelia Smiaroski of Pioneer Valley Regional School. Pioneer’s Meg Burrington is one of the West coaches.
On the boys’ side, Greenfield’s George Felogloy and Max Pirozhkov will play for the East, and Tim Caplice will serve as one of the coaches. The West roster includes Tyler Lajoie and Bryce Melanson of Athol, Zach Korpiewski of Franklin Tech, Justin Farrick of Frontier, Malik Adams and Pedro Matos of Mahar, Jacob Cross and Levin DuPree of Mohawk, Eric Blanker and Bradley Hastings of Pioneer and Jalen Sanders of Turners Falls. Franklin Tech’s Matt Llewelyn and Pioneer’s Dave Hastings are the coaches.
UMass women win
Cierra Dillard scored 24 points to lead four UMass players in double figures Wednesday night as the Minutewomen downed La Salle, 81-65, in the first round of the Atlantic 10 women’s basketball tournament in Richmond, Va.
UMass, the No. 11 seed, won its sixth straight game and improved to 12-17 entering tonight’s 7 p.m. second-round game against sixth-seeded Fordham.
Bria Stallworth added 17 points for the Minutewomen, 15 coming in the second half. Rashida Timbilla posted a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds and Alyx Stiff scored 11. Maggie Mulligan contributed eight points and 12 rebounds.
UMass led 34-25 at halftime and built the lead to as many as 18 points midway through the third quarter before La Salle (5-25) trimmed the deficit to six. The Minutewomen then used a 17-7 fourth-quarter run to go ahead by 16.
Micahya Owens led the 14th-seeded Explorers with a game-high 27 points.
UMass women’s lax falls
Hannah Newton and Nicole Troost each scored three golas for UMass in a 9-8 loss to No. 14 Boston College, 9-8, uin women;s klacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at the Newton Campus Lacrosse and Soccer Field in Newton.
Murphy added two assists for the Minutewomen (4-1), as did Erika Eipp. Callie Santos and Eileen McDonald both scored one goal.
