SHELBURNE FALLS — A car slammed into a utility pole on Sunday afternoon, knocking the pole down and sending live wires flying into the street.

“He hit the telephone pole and broke it right off,” said Fire Chief John Taylor. “Fortunately, no one was hurt.” About a mile of the street near Colrain-Shelburne Road was shut down by police and firefighters after the accident.

Authorities were on the scene directing traffic away from the live wires, while waiting for the power company to show up at about 4 p.m.

The car was headed southbound when the accident occurred.

The driver and the passenger in the vehicle were not injured and refused any medical treatment.
