GREENFIELD — The Greenfield softball team hasn’t lost often in recent years, never mind twice in a row.
But since back-to-back losses to Turners and Hampshire, the Green Wave bats have been on a roll.
Greenfield scored 13 runs on Tuesday to run-rule Wahconah, and on Thursday against a tough Frontier team, scored 16 runs to defeat the Redhawks, 16-4, in six innings at Vets Field in a Franklin County League West contest.
“That’s a very good Frontier team,” Green Wave coach Ray Dodge said. “We needed to start hitting and we did. The loss we had against Hampshire was ugly all around. The girls knew that and made the adjustments they needed to make to get better.”
It was a monster second inning that broke the game open for Greenfield (5-2).
Frontier (6-2) got out to a fast start, loading the bases in the first after Ashley Taylor walked, Skyler Steele singled and Olivia Machon put down a bunt. Sophia Pinardi doubled to score all three and give the Redhawks an opening 3-0 lead.
The Wave answered quickly, as Anna Bucala walked, Olivia Lemay singled and MacKenzie Paulin blasted a home run to left field that knotted the score 3-3.
After Paulin kept Frontier off the board in the top of the second, Greenfield took complete control in the bottom of the frame by scoring 11 runs to take a 14-3 lead.

“It was good to see them rally like that,” Dodge said. “Giving up three in the first then three hitters into our inning it was tied again. That was huge and we continued it into the second.”
With one out, Sarah McCloud got the rally started with a single. Bucala doubled and Lemay also doubled after to drive in both and give Greenfield the lead.
Paulin was intentionally walked and Gloria McDonald singled to load the bases for Meghan Collins, who singled to drive in two to make it a 7-3 game.
Walks once again loaded the bases and after Grace Laurie drew a walk to force in a run and give the Wave an 8-3 lead, McCloud singled to drive in two and Bucala followed with a double to give Greenfield a 13-3 lead. Paulin grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Bucala and give the Wave a 14-3 lead after two.
“[Frontier pitcher Raine Wonsey] was on a tight leash after that but did a really good job from there,” Frontier coach Gary Deane said. “We have plenty of things to work on. We’re not there yet. We have to work on our defense for sure. We knew there were some cracks in it and this was our third game in a row. No matter who you play, that’s hard. Props to Greenfield. They’re a good team and they hit it well.”
With the lead and a pitcher of Paulin’s caliber in the circle, a comeback was always going to be tough for Frontier.
Taylor — fresh off recording her 100th hit — knocked her second hit of the game in the fourth, a double, and an error allowed her to score to cut the lead to 14-4.
The Green Wave sealed the win in the sixth, as Bucala singled, Lemay reached on an error before Paulin singled to score Bucala. McDonald followed with a single and Collins closed the game with a base hit to drive in Lemay and give Greenfield its 12-run lead in the sixth.
Paulin pitched all six innings for the Wave, striking out 12 and giving up six hits. Wonsey struck out nine for Frontier, and Deane said strong senior leadership will help the Redhawks move forward after the tough loss.
“I’m proud of Ashley for getting her 100th hit,” Deane said. “We have four seniors, two are in their fifth year on varsity and the other two are in their fourth year on varsity. That’s a hell of a lot of experience. We have fun in practice and work but it’s not like we have to go back to the stuff we instituted a few years ago when they were young and we were building. We work on good stuff and we’ll go right back to it in practice.”
