SOUTHWICK – Kameron Normandie was a one-man band against the Franklin Tech field hockey team on Wednesday.
The Southwick senior continued to score goals in bunches, netting all four tallies for the second-seeded Rams en route to a 4-0 win over the third-seeded Eagles in the Western Mass. Class B semifinal round.
Southwick (13-5) will play the winner of Thursday’s semifinal between No. 1 Belchertown and No. 4 Smith Academy in the Class B title game on Monday night.
“Today we ran into a better team,” Tech coach Rian Lovett offered. “They were better than us. There’s no reason to be disappointed in the way we played. I told the girls after that they gave a good effort and there’s no reason to hang their heads.”
The Eagles (11-5-2) were aiming to reach the sectional title game for the fourth straight year. They won titles in 2021 and 2022, and fell to East Longmeadow in last year’s WMass final.
Normandie’s scoring barrage denied that pursuit. He got the Rams on the board just two minutes into the game with a powerful shot into the back of the net, and then scored two more in the second quarter to stake the hosts to a 3-0 halftime lead.
He entered Wednesday’s game with 34 goals on the year, including six-goal efforts in wins over Franklin County squads Mohawk Trail and Turners Falls.
Tech goalie Madison Markwell made several nice saves on Southwick’s top scorer, including a few on breakaway attempts, but Normandie netted a fourth goal early in the fourth quarter on a penalty corner to put things out of reach.

“Despite the score I thought we played really well at times and we continued to do a lot of the things that have made us successful this season,” Lovett said. “We’ve been building throughout the year and hopefully that will continue as we head into some more big games next week.”
Franklin Tech will participate in the inaugural state vocational field hockey tournament next week, and the Eagles have also already qualified for the MIAA Division 4 state tournament which begins Oct. 31. Brackets for the state tournament will be released on Tuesday.
“I think we’re in a good place going forward,” Lovett said. “We learned a lot today from this game. We’ve got a good thing going, a good group of seniors who want to do well and succeed so there’s no reason we can’t go out there and win some games here.”
Part of that optimism stems from an eight-member senior class, which has played a significant role in the program’s ascension over the past half decade.
“We get to this point in the season now and there’s not that shell-shocked feeling,” said Lovett. “Everyone on this team has been on that stage before. Sure, there are nerves, but not those debilitating ones that prevent you from going out and playing your best. We’ll be ready.”
Abi Dobias and Hannah Gilbert paced the Eagles in the midfield and up top on Wednesday, while Lilianna Inman keyed the defensive effort in Tech’s semifinal defeat. The team’s best scoring chance came late in the first quarter when Dobias and Mckenzie Sourdiffe-Phelps nearly snuck one past Southwick goalie Ava Lightcap during a scrum in front of the cage. The ball ultimately went out of play for a free hit.
