GREENFIELD — A Vermont man responsible for vehicle and house break-ins in Bernardston and Northfield last year has been sentenced to five years in jail after pleading guilty to criminal charges involving 11 victims.

Schuyler D. Gibson, 40, of Brattleboro, Vermont, pleaded guilty in Greenfield District Court to 22 charges, including seven counts of breaking and entering into a motor vehicle, four counts of larceny under $1,200 and one count of larceny with a credit card. The charges stem from a Sept. 24 house break-in in Bernardston that was followed by seven vehicle break-ins in Northfield on Sept. 25.

Judge William F. Mazanec III on Jan. 5 imposed the sentence of 2½ years in the Franklin County Jail and House of Correction on some of the charges, with an additional 2½ years on others. The sentences will be served consecutively.

The cases were investigated by the Bernardston and Northfield police departments, in cooperation with the Brattleboro Police Department and Vermont State Police, and were prosecuted by Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Nicholas Atallah. Defense attorney Daniel Solomon represented Gibson.

Police recovered and returned some of the victims’ belongings.
