It was a winning conclusion to the regular season for the UMass women’s basketball team.

The Minutewomen capped an impressive 2024-25 Atlantic 10 Conference campaign with a 61-55 victory over George Washington on Wednesday at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C.

UMass closed out its regular season 16-13 overall and 11-7 in the A-10. The Minutewomen are likely destined for the No. 6 seed in next week’s conference tournament, which begins March 5 at the Henrico Sports & Events Center in Glen Allen, Virginia.

Trailing 42-39 entering the fourth quarter, the Minutewomen rallied in a back-and-forth final period. The teams traded baskets until Megan Olbrys’ layup with 55 seconds remaining put UMass ahead 57-55.

George Washington (11-17, 4-13) missed its final two shots down the stretch and also turned the ball over, with the Minutewomen sealing the win at the free throw line thanks to makes from Allie Palmieri (three) and Yahmani McKayle. All told, UMass outscored GW by a 22-13 margin over the final 10 minutes to secure the come-from-behind win.

Olbrys led the way with 20 points and five rebounds, while McKayle followed with 18 points and Palmieri joined them in double figures with 14 points and five boards.

UMass won despite shooting just 38.9 percent from the floor, and making just 2-of-12 3-pointers. The visitors’ aggressiveness paid off, as the Minutewomen held a 17-5 edge in free throw makes on the afternoon. That helped overcome a 38-29 deficit in rebounding.

UMass led 31-26 at halftime, but the Minutewomen shot just 3-for-15 in the third quarter and were outscored by an 18-9 margin to fall behind entering the fourth.
