BERNARDSTON — Two people were transported for medical treatment Tuesday night after a head-on collision that resulted in the closure of Northfield Road (Route 10) for about three hours.

The two vehicles, each with a single occupant, were traveling in opposite directions on Northfield Road in the area of Purple Meadow Road when they collided at around 9:45 p.m., according to Fire Chief Peter Shedd. Airbags in both vehicles deployed.

The driver of the sedan was able to exit the car on his own and was transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center by Northfield EMS. Greenfield Fire Department was requested to provide additional assistance with the extrication of the woman in the other vehicle, which Shedd described as a small SUV.

“It took about 50 minutes to get her out of the vehicle,” Shedd said. “We ended up using two sets of Jaws of Life — Bernardston and Greenfield, working together.”

She was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield from a landing zone established at Pioneer Valley Regional School.

Shedd said the collision appeared to have been a high-speed impact. Both individuals were transported to the hospital to check for possible head trauma or internal injuries; the driver of the SUV also had some injuries to both her legs, according to Shedd.

“Both parties are very lucky to be alive,” Shedd said.

Koch’s Automotive towed both vehicles and the road reopened at around 1 a.m.
