Library hosting Davis Bates for ‘Sea Songs & Stories’

CONWAY — Get ready to hit the high seas next weekend, as the Field Memorial Library welcomes local singer and storyteller Davis Bates for “Sea Songs & Stories: From Shore to Deep Water” on Saturday, June 29, at 2 p.m.

Bates will be joined by fiddlers David Whittier and Lisa Barondes, as well as guitarist David Merriman, as they sing sea shanties, ghost ballads, folk tales, Native American stories and a wide variety of other traditional songs from different cultures. The event is free and is funded, in part, by a grant from the Conway Cultural Council.

Sunday Speaker series continues on June 23

SOUTH DEERFIELD — Following the success of the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church’s Sunday Speakers series session with Rev. Donald Noiseux in April, he is returning to the church this weekend for a second discussion on the Mysteries of Fatima.

Noiseux will discuss the Miracle of the Sun, the three secrets the Virgin Mary shared and how these events from 1917 are still relevant in today’s world. Noiseux’s first discussion took place in April and more than 130 people attended. The event is free and will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 23.

Deerfield resident named to Quinnipiac dean’s list

HAMDEN, Conn. — Deerfield resident Camryn Howe was named to Quinnipiac University’s dean’s list for the spring semester.

To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 with no grade lower than a C. Full-time students must complete at least 14 credits in a semester, with at least 12 credits that have been graded on a letter grade basis to be eligible.

Conway resident graduates with juris doctor in law

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Conway resident Ciara Hudson graduated from Marquette University with a juris doctor in law.

Hudson was one of 2,852 students to graduate during Marquette University’s 143rd commencement.
